With the warm weather coming to the colder climates, many people will polish their clubs and scrub their balls in preparation for one of the most popular of all pastimes. Get your minds out of the gutter, people. I am not referring to that. I am referring to golf.
What do we call an activity that you can never truly win? That’s right, friends, we call it golf. I suppose golf is some form of competition, either with ones self or against a field of other participants. Regardless, I just do not think you can win at it. Think about it. If someone shoots par, they will be upset about that putt they missed that would have put them under par. If someone shoots one under par, they will wonder about that drive they shanked that might have led to another birdie, and a two-under score. And so on, and so on.
I for one have never felt like my athletic abilities did me any good on the golf course. Therefore, I have always been reluctant to call it a sport. I have also witnessed some of the most uncoordinated and/or out-of-shape people excel at the activity. Remember John Daly? Further, just because it is played with a ball (or MANY balls in my case), does not guarantee that it is a sport. Maybe it is just called a sport because ESPN shows highlights and we have no other way to market it.
Or, maybe it is a sport. If you think so, your voting will be easy today. If, however, you do not think it is a sport, than what the hell is it? I for one certainly do not think it is much of a leisure activity. Throwing clubs at trees and snapping them over my knee certainly does not qualify as leisurely. So if it is not a sport, and it is not a leisure activity, than what exactly is golf?
We have given you a few obvious and a few creative choices for how you can define golf. So go, and vote now. We at Poll Smash would finally classify this frustrating activity that consumes so many of our lives.
